Booking choice: The Atlantis submarine dive, from $160 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
The submarine and a snorkel trip both show you Maui's reef fish, but they are very different mornings. The sub is short, dry and deep; snorkel boats are longer, wetter, include food and usually find turtles.
The table below is the short version, followed by the details for each option.
The quick answer
Choose the submarine if you cannot or do not want to swim, have children from 36 inches, or want to see a wreck at 100 feet. Choose a snorkel trip if you are comfortable in the water and want turtles up close: Molokini boats leave Maalaea or Kihei early, and the Lanai rafts leave Lahaina. For breathing underwater yourself, try intro scuba from age 10.
How do the submarine and snorkel trips compare?
The sub is the shortest and driest; the snorkel boats last four to five and a half hours and include food.
| Trip | From | Length | You get wet? | Ages | Leaves from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atlantis submarine | $160 | About 1 h 50 (45 min underwater) | No | 36 in tall, no infants | Lahaina Harbor |
| Lanai eco raft | $97 | 5 hours | Yes | 4 and up | Front Street, Lahaina |
| Lanai dolphin & snorkel | $175 | 4 hours | Yes | 4 and up | Mala boat yard, Lahaina |
| Calypso to Molokini | $189 | 5.5 hours | Optional (glass-bottom room) | See listing | Maalaea Harbor |
| Molokini & turtles raft | $199 | 5 hours | Yes | 8 to 65 | Kihei Boat Ramp |
| Intro scuba | $158 | 3 hours | Yes, diving | 10 and up | Front Street, Lahaina |
Staying dry? The submarine goes to about 100 to 130 feet and cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the Atlantis submarine diveWhich is better for non-swimmers?
The submarine: you never touch the water, and you see the reef deeper than any snorkeler.
If a non-swimmer is traveling with snorkelers, the Calypso catamaran is a good compromise: it has a glass-bottom viewing room and flotation devices, so everyone can come along. Snorkel crews provide flotation and instruction, but you still have to get in the ocean.

Where do you see turtles: submarine or snorkel?
Snorkeling: turtle spots are shallow, and snorkel boats aim for them, while turtles on the sub dive are luck.
The Calypso stops at Turtle Town after Molokini, the Redline raft visits several turtle spots, and guests on the Lanai trips report turtles at the second snorkel stop. The sub's highlights are deeper: the wreck, reef fish and sometimes reef sharks.

Is Molokini better than the submarine?
For confident snorkelers, usually yes: the Molokini crater is home to more than 200 fish species, and you swim among them.
The trade-offs: an early start (6:45 AM check-in for the 7:30 AM Calypso, 6:30 AM for the 7 AM Redline raft), a longer day, and a higher price. Rough water can cut Molokini time short, as one Calypso guest found. The submarine is shorter, dry and runs from Lahaina.

Mixed group of swimmers and non-swimmers? The Calypso has a glass-bottom room, slides and two meals.

The cheapest way into the water: the Lanai eco raft is $97 for five hours from Lahaina, with brunch and spinner dolphins often seen on the way.
Snorkel gear, flotation and instruction by lifeguards are included. There is no snorkeling for children under 4 or pregnant guests, and you need to board the raft and climb its swim ladder unaided. The small-group Lanai dolphin trip leaves from the Mala boat yard with up to 26 guests.

Want dolphins and snorkeling for less? The eco raft includes gear, lifeguards and brunch.
Explore the Lanai eco raftIs intro scuba a better idea than the submarine?
If you are 10 or older, can swim and like the idea of breathing underwater, it is the bigger thrill for about the same price.
The Lahaina intro dive with Dive Maui takes three hours with no more than four guests. You must finish PADI eLearning before the day (no refund if you have not), fill in a medical form, carry your own gear, and not fly or drive up Haleakala for 18 hours afterwards. The sub has none of these hurdles.

Can you do the submarine and snorkeling on the same day?
It is tight: snorkel boats leave around 7 to 9 AM and last four to five and a half hours, while the last sub dive in the mid-2026 schedule was at 1 PM.
A morning Lanai trip from Lahaina and an afternoon dive could just fit, but a delay would cost you the sub. Separate days are safer, and both cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Which should you choose?
Match the trip to how you feel about the water.

- Young kids from 36 inches: the submarine.
- Turtles and Molokini: the Redline raft or the Calypso.
- Dolphins on a budget: the Lanai eco raft.
- Want to breathe underwater: intro scuba, 10 and up.
